About Tommy

Tommy Costello is a pitching and strength training coach with a revolutionary approach to athlete development, renowned for his ability to combine cutting-edge science with an athlete-first philosophy.

Tommy is rooted in his unique “down and in” philosophy. Meaning true success begins internally, with the “down and in” focus on self-awareness, mental resilience, and personal growth. This foundational work nurtures not only better athletes but more grounded individuals. He believes nobody understands their body better than the athlete themselves. This approach empowers athletes to describe and trust their own feelings, turning self awareness into a competitive edge.

At the same time, he incorporates what he calls the “out and up” pursuit of external achievements like building physical strength, gaining velocity, and on-field performance. By balancing these two aspects, Tommy creates complete athletes who excel under pressure and sustain long-term success.

“Most programs focus almost entirely on the ‘out and up’—the measurable results,” Tommy explains. “But what truly separates elite performers is the work they put into the ‘down and in’—understanding who they are, trusting their instincts, and developing the mental strength to handle the challenges that come with competition. My philosophy ensures athletes excel in both areas.” Tommy’s holistic perspective is the product of years of hands-on experience at premier training institutions, including TB12, Tread Athletics, Driveline Baseball, Proactive Sports Performance, Tom House Sports and Titleist Performance Institute . These programs helped him develop a deep understanding of the biomechanics of movement, arm health, and rotational efficiency. His certifications in Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS) and XPT Breathing reflect his mastery of body mechanics and breath work, key components of injury-free performance. By blending the best practices from these elite methodologies, Tommy has created a coaching system that prioritizes the individual athlete by tailoring proven techniques to suit each pitcher’s unique needs.

Clients of Costello Coaching span from NFL and MLB players to rising stars in high school and college baseball. By combining elite level techniques with a focus on the mental and emotional aspects of pitching, he stands apart as a coach who doesn’t just develop throwers,  Costello Coaching creates athletes that thrive. Whether he’s working with MLB professionals or aspiring high school players, Tommy’s approach consistently produces results, empowering athletes to unlock their full potential on and off the field.
